Yes, I agree - very good article. I think getting professional quality is so important. I have had great luck with Don Flamenco.

This article was helpful indeed. It is hard to find an affordable flamenco shoes unless you come all the way to Spain.
One brand she did not mention in her article was Roberto Garrudo. I got turquoise leather professional hand stitched shoes there for 69 euros in their Sevilla store. That is the equivalent of about $100.

You can definately go a more inexpensive route, but you will get what you pay for. In my experience that is. I don't know what level I would grade myself, but in my first year I can say I didn't know any better and honestly, my shoes didn't really matter. As my studies progressed I noticed the difference in the sounds as the footwork became more intricate. The beginner shoes I had been using had a more of a thud sound while, after purchasing my first pair of Menkes shoes I noticed a crisper cleaner sound from them. Also the rubber soles on the shoes made in Spain are unique to the non-spanish ones and they do make for better dancing. Flamenco dance shoes can last you for many years, so why not bite the bullet and purchase a good pair right off the back. Get them in leather, a good professional or semi-professional pair. If you later decide flamenco is simply not your thing, you can easily resell them on ebay and get back a fair amount of money.

Interesting to hear you listen to the sound of your shoes.
I was never aware of that!
