I used Savarez red card for over 45 years. They were recommended to me by my friend and guitarist, Vicente Gomez. Every year or so, I would experiment with other strings to see if there were other strings that worked better on my particular guitar, which is a 1966 Oribe flamenco with pegs. Six years ago, I tried D'Addario Pro Arte normal tension EJ45C, which have composite bases and Two G strings in the set. The beige colored G 3rd string was much louder than the normal one that came with the set. The composite bases were the best I have ever tried. They are powerful and loud. They last and last about 3 times longer than any other string I have used. However, I put on two Savarez red card plastic wound trebles, which were the 2nd and 3rd (B & G) instead of the ones that came with the set. I did use the E first string treble that came with the EJ45C set. This, in my opinion, was the best sounding set of flamenco strings I have ever used. Last month, I bought 14 sets of other brands of strings and did a test. After 2 weeks of testing, my favorite combination still was the best I have ever used. I gave the 14 sets of strings I did not like to a friend of mine who is the dean of classical guitar studies at a local university. I sometimes teach a master class for him giving a lecture and demonstration of flamenco guitar music to his classical guitar students.

I've recently used the Mari strings sold on Ebay. I know some of you
guys are skeptical, but for my guitar and the way I play I am pleased with the sound. They are the most satisfactory trebles I've used in a long time for me. I don't care for the D'Adarrio trebles... they seem too "classical" for me, and I've mostly used LaBella because they are not so hard to find. I prefer the Daniel Mari. The Mari basses remind me of Hannabach basses, but the windings are not so durable, even though they keep an acceptable sound for awhile. The Mari trebles suit where I want to go with my sound. They are not thin and reedy, nor too thick and "tubby" (somebody else's description of a sound, but seems appropriate). My guitar is hand-made by me and about 10 years old. I've played it several 1000 hours so it is nicely broken in and still opening up. Spruce top, Alaskan cedar back and sides, Spanish cedar neck. If you are looking for a treble to help you develop a powerful, loud picado, I think the Mari strings may be worth a try. |

I have been using MARI guitar strings and have to say they have been wonderful in every sense.
They have been used by Sabicas and Mario Escudero. Authentic flamenco tone. Bright, clear trebles with deep, percussive basses. Excellent balance across all the strings. Good volume with a relatively supple feel. They can be found at ostriemusicsupplies.com |

I agree - J45 da ddario medium tension is "the best". I started with Savarez red card, but I noticed they do not last. Discovered J45 Da ddario - I own a 1968 Ramirez and a 1968 Conde - I have been using J45 Da ddario all these years. No need to try any others. I buy 12 sets at a time. Sometimes the fourth string breaks - so, I carry spare single fourth strings inside my guitar. Strongly recommend EJ45 Da ddario medium tension! To all Classical and Flamenco guitarists. thanks
posted earlier been using luthier blue set 30 for awhile now...looking for a change been a bit dis satisfied with the treble response lately the ramirez strings are a responsive set...currently have a set on...worth a try good tension along the trebles...fatter sound than the luthiers will look again at the j45's...been awhile...just remember the tubby sounding trebles.... also will look into the mari's again...was resonably impressed with there response.. guess it's impportant to switch strings at random intervals as i find each set offers something slightly different.. dont really subscribe to any set being 'the best'.... thanks for the post.. |

I just switched back to Savarez. Sorry, the D'Addario sound just doesn't cut if for me. Even if they do last a little longer.
