Does anyone have a microphone that you will recommend for live playing with flamenco guitar? I have been recommended AKG C 430. I am interested in buying a microphone that is not too expensive and that makes least possible feedback and of course a good sound for flamenco playing.

I use an Audio technica pro 70 very good, it is with a clip on into the sound hole, so mo microfone standard in front of you.
Not se cheap, but very good. Payul |

Shure SM57's are what i've used for over 20 years now.................still the same ones i bought way back when too.........
i've used AKG's and Peavey PVM's before....but the '57's if set up properly seem to have the most "Natural" sound. Many professional flamencos i know also like to use a pair of SM57's for the same reason. Eitherway........Good Luck with your search!! ![]()

How do you set the microphone up properly?

What works for me is getting the microphone pointing at a 4 or 5 o'clock angle and pointing it close to where the sound hole and the fretboard meet. That is my typical setup as it keeps my hand from blocking the sound and it picks up the highs and lows from the strings.

Position is very important when micing a guitar, moving the microphone around can totally change the characteristics of the sound. That is why its good to get someone else to play the guitar while you move the microphone around wearing a good pair of closed headphones. They will block out most of the external sound and you end up hearing what the microphone is hearing so you can move around the micrphone and find the sweet spot(s).
Like faseta said pointing the microphone towards where the neck joins the body is a good starting point. Moving closer towards the head usually ends up in a brighter sound, this helps keep each string clearly definied. Go to far however, and you start to lose the fullness of the guitar. Moving the otherway down the body gives a fuller sound more complete sound, but go to far this way and it starts to get too muddy and you lose string definition and attack, which is something (from my very limited knowledge about flamenco) I would say is very importnat in flamenco playing because it is very rhythmic. Playing live should make it easier to find a good sound than trying to record because you still get a lot of ambient sound and natural reverb which helps with the sound. Hope some of that helps. Cheers, Mark. |

I highly recommend the Heil PR series. As a former Broadcast and Audio Electronics Enginneer, I have used many professional mics of all prices and found nothing compares for live or recording flamenco guitar like the Heils. PR 30 cannot be beat. PR Series Microphones | Heil Sound

Hi David,
Welcome to the foro here! I have used it a few times and I did not like it too much..allthough a lot of shops sell them as "flamenco microfones" The golpes came out way too loud and boomy, and it deformed the sound of my guitar too much. I have very good experiance with the audio technica pro 70 the golpes are perfect and the charackter of your guitar stays the same ( more or less ofcourse) Payul Last edited by Payul; 07-08-2009 at 02:00 AM. |
