Interesting... The new generation of "Traditional Flamenco" artist are taking their music in a new and different directions. Although still thankfully far from the Jesse Cooks and Otmar Lieberts I do find the new directions refreshing and exciting. Not all of it is great, the few that do shine are brilliant.
I would agree with at_leo_87 that most of the Flamenco tinged music is not all that great. I would also say that comparing Flamencos to Jesse Cook and Otmar Liebert deserves some sort of consequence. Whats next reviewing Armik or Lara and Reyes? Or maybe some other long haired earing wearing guitar player with super hot flaming shredding tunes that are also smooth and relaxing? Joking of course, but I am thankful that even the worst of Estrellas cross over tunes is far far away from any of the names mentioned above.

.............well i followed the you tube link.
had'nt heard this before. guess the first thing is to listen to it as music. certainly would love to live in a place where this is the 'pop' music. guitars sound great, played with precision and soul. the vocal is passionate and contemporary, world music [whatever that means]. sure, not fiery and intense but still contains beauty, dynamics and spirit. not really something i would listen to alot but still something that embraces a fusion of traditions that would make a performance an enjoyable musical experience. to me there is an element of pop but i use that in a positive way as all folk songs became 'popular' songs within their culture. our world is a much bigger place now. tradition can only be preserved within current times, it is bound to change. |
