Yeah, I guess I will have to buy a new sound card eventually, but I will work my way up to better software/hardware, greater knowledge, etc. gradually. I have a tendency to try to crowd way too much new stuff into my life all at the same time. This is something that I have been trying to focus on preventing lately, so I need to just get used to what I have while gradually absorbing more and more information, and only information that is at the level of information that I need and can understand presently. I have noticed some difficulty in recording with Fruity Loops in that you need to select an entirely different sound driver (some ASIO thing) in order to record. Thus, things such as the metronome () are not available while recording, so I have to use a separate metronome and then move and crop the clip to fit with the metronome once I switch back to the primary sound driver after recording. Perhaps a new sound card for recording would eventually facilitate that issue, or maybe just better software than Fruity Loops and better hardware than a laptop...

haha yeah, perhaps I will start another thread at some point if I have some other questions which I wish to pose to the general public. I try to juggle lots of reading into my schedule of practicing, thinking about college, other books that I am already reading (including one that I bought yesterday even though I have two others to finish first), and all of the other little things that I need and want to do, but every once in a while a day gets devoted to researching something on the internet. Perhaps I should renew some old library cards and start spending time in the library like I did as a kid

you can basically think of an asio as a soundcard designed for recording.

ok, here is what you do.
get something like this:
Product: Alpha | Lexicon Pro

it comes with cubase. so boom.. two birds with one stone! an asio AND a new recording software.

next, get some studio monitors. these are much different than regular speakers. you need speakers that are designed for recording, mixing, etc. purposes.

next, find some books and online resources on recording.

you'll be an "expert" in 3 weeks.

ay yay yay, so much information haha. I was just watching some videos on YouTube about "Home Recording How To" and things like that, and I am trying to absorb all of these new vocabulary terms while beginning to brainstorm what I should do and what will work for me. I think I will take your advice except backwards, starting with the books. Get all my key terms and basics to the point where I completely understand them; what the basic, general sorts of things I will need are and what they do; and then try to find some entry-level software/hardware to work with. It might make a lot more sense if I had a little bit more time at the moment to research. But I have a couple other things in the back of my mind right now which I need to attend to, so I am quickly browsing to just skim the surface. At some point I will find at least a day to devote to researching it more in-depth, and then I am sure it will be more lucid to my understanding.

Anyway, thanks for contributing a couple little starting points for various topics, and that Alpha box seems like a pretty good idea too. One guy on YouTube uses that and the MXL 990 (which comes with a guitar mic apparently) and that is basically his setup. Total cost of maybe a couple hundred dollars and seems to work out pretty good, that is what he says.

you have to be careful about what you hear on youtube because everybody is an "expert" at "everything." dont worry about cramming it all in at once, you'll get a headache. now that i think of it, a little bit of info here and there is probably a better way to learn.

i actually have the mxl 990/991 combo. i used the 991 to record. maybe you've heard how it sounds by now.

here's one more link to get you started:

Yeah, I've realized that haha. That's why I don't just watch one video, I try to watch many, many related videos. By that time, unless just everybody is wrong, I can get a basic understanding that should be for the most part correct, especially if the videos seem to be by credible sources such as actual producers and such. Same thing with Wikipedia. Although there is a lot of good information, there is some wrong information (although I heard that one now has to be a member of Wikipedia to edit a page, which should theoretically add to the credibility of information on the site, although I am not sure about whether this is true or not) so I try to read information from many, many sources. Not only does this help verify information, but every site has at least a little bit of information that the other sites don't have, so it actually helps maximize the potential knowledge acquisition of the researching time.

Yeah, I have noticed that gradual acquisition of information, proficiency, skill, etc., and especially in a specific specialized area, is something that works best with just about everything in life. Those are the kinds of life lessons that one gets from something seemingly simple like playing the guitar

Ah yes, MXL 991, what a great sounding mic What is the 991 anyway? Is that the guitar mic that the other guy mentioned? Or is it basically the 990 except perhaps better in some way?

Oh, man, that site looks like it's just stuffed like a hoagie full of everything I could ever want to know. Thanks a lot! That will be my library for a while

The CD is fantastic and such a positive step forward for the global guitar community. Good to see a couple of australian players included. Kudos!
