Hi everyone. My name is Jim Kirby (friends call me Kirby). I am a professor of civil engineering at the University of Delaware, and an aspiring amateur guitar builder. I am pretty much a hack guitarist myself and actually came to the building world by way of Telecasters and steel string acoustics. When I started asking friends what they would like to have, they started asking for classical guitars, which was the beginning of an intense educational experience for me. After getting into the nylon string world, I have found that my long background as a jazz and jam band fan and the resulting valuation put on improvisation made me a much more natural victim for the charms of flamenco than for the composed strictures of classical. This was reinforced by a sabbatical this spring, which found me and my wife living in Granada, where I had a chance to meet a few guitarist and a few builders and gain some access to the flamenco world there. Now, inspired, I want to keep building, and learning more about the music.

Hi Kirby,
Welcome to the falseta forum! nice to have such inspirating after a sabatical....looking forward to see/hear your first flamenco guitar... . Maybe keep us informed about the proces? I have heared from builders, that a flamenco guitarist is more "picky" about the guitar than a classical one....be aware...lol ![]() Payul |
