A lot of great suggestions for new forums have been coming in so I wanted to post them here and get feedback from all of you. One thing to keep in mind when introducing a new forum is the placement of it as either a stand alone main forum or a sub-forum of an existing main forum.
So here are some of the suggestions so far: - Moron or Old School Flamenco - Cante - Tabs / Sheetmusic What we could do is make main forums and create sub-forums, for example: Flamenco Styles - Ask questions on different styles (new main forum) |_Moron - Talk all about Moron Flamenco (new sub forum) Please post your thoughts... Thanks! |

Why couldn't we start a Flamenco Guitar Competition starting in California? Think of it. There are so many classical guitar competitions in this country yet I know of none for Flamenco. Why is that?
I personally would like to see Flamenco Guitar go against CLassical guitar and all other acoustical guitars. With the hundreds or eveven thousands of classical guitar competitions in the World, not one will allow a flamenco Guitarist to enter. To me that is interesting because a classical guitarist plays written works by other composers. A Flamenco on the other hand, plays a bit from everyone, then creates on his own and creates a blend. A good example of this is the following: Take ten good FLamenco guitarists in Spain and put them all in the same room. Ask each to play a Soleares or Bulerias. They will all play it differently. Ask 10 classical guitarists to play Leyenda or Adelita and they will all play it the same way.. Does this make any sense and can it be done? Ni guapo, ni rico, simplemente................. I personally would suggest the name Classic Flamenco for a sub-forum, instead of either Old School Flamenco or Morón Flamenco. Morón flamenco is clearly a subdivision of "classic" flamenco, and the term "Old School" has an air of obsolescence and quiet decay about it that may grate on some sensibilities.

I think Moron Flamenco is basically Diego Del Gastor. Had it not been for Don Pohren(now dead) he would never have been famous. I think FLamenco is Flamenco no matter what style. A great solo is a great solo. A good guitarist is a good guitarist. THere sould not be any type of divisions.

Federico, why stop there? Isn't Great Music Great Music? Why even have a forum about flamenco? Isn't Great Guitar Great Guitar, whether it's flamenco, classical, Rock, Blues?
I think you'll agree that, if my point is silly, yours was silly too. All flamenco isn't the same--anybody can hear that--and it's perfectly OK to talk about the Gypsy Kings as being in a different box than, say, Agujetas singing martinetes a palo seco. aurelio |

You are right, great music and guitar is all good. But Flamenco is Flamenco. Hate to tell you this but rumba and sevillanas is not considered Flamenco by Spanish professionals. So no, going back to the original question, why are there no Flamenco Guitar Contests in other countries outside of Spain. There certainly are enough players. ? This is one question that I do not know the answer to. Do you? Help me out here.............

Lets make sure to stick to Forum Suggestions. The debate about Flamenco I am sure can go on and on. Your suggestions are much appreciated and will help grow this forum!
@federico - Your question about Flamenco Guitar Contests is a good one. Can you please start a new thread about it in the General Flamenco section? Thank you! |

I'm willing to put some money down to start a flamenco guitar contest in California. Anybody else out there? I don't mean to sound abrasive but this might help this website to gain readership. Am I wrong to suggest this? Opinions are good but action is much better. Does this make any sense or is it me that does not get it. By the way that happens a lot :-)

We are all very lucky that Diego became famous, otherwise we would have never heard about him. It is not fancy playing that we enjoy about him, it is his SENTIR, his feeling, his duende, and his soul that is his alone. Diego can not be compared with other guitarists, even with Paco De Lucia. When Paco de Lucia plays with feeling, even with his fantastic technique, it is the duende that fills our soul, not his technique. Many times great technique overpowers sentiment. I find this to be true of flamenco students and pros, even with correct compas, the lack of feeling leaves a great void in one's heart. Another thing, those that are lucky enough to play with singers or dancers are really playing, especially in a juerga-then one finds out if your fancy playing fits in!!!!! Too many guitarists do not recognize their own feelings, " I have to play like him" NO! You have to play like you!!!!!!! What you feel tells you how to play. Of course learning is important, but not to the extent that one becomes a Paco or a Diego robot.
