Flamenco Reviews

Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde is a self described fusion of flamenco, funk, jazz and world music who recently contacted Falseta.com and submitted a CD for review. Based in North Carolina Cabo Verde has an impressive collection of tracks that keeps them busy at local venues.

The CD Falseta.com received contained six tracks that quickly went onto the old iPod for steady listening. It became very clear that this was not the straight Flamenco we are accustomed to listening to around here but yet every track had a steady groove to keep me interested.

I really enjoyed listening to Jake Wolf on bass as he really kept the groove going on every track. His technique reminded me of some of the great Flamenco bassist with his ability to execute fills, harmonies and scales. Robin Tolleson and Jake Wolf together are a solid rhythm section for guitarist Juan Benavides. Juan’s guitar playing and compositions remind me of a Tonino Baliardo of the Gipsy Kings more so than a Tomatito or Paco de Lucia.

Overall the tracks on this CD really reflect Cabo Verde’s experience playing in live venues and leaving no doubt that they put on a great live performance.

If you are interested in Flamenco fusion and are in the North or South Carolina area make sure to check out Cabo Verde. For more information about Cabo Verde and to listen to some of the tracks you can visit the Cabo Verde MySpace page at: http://www.myspace.com/quebrao.

Yes, this really is nice stuff. I encourage everyone to go listen to the MySpace site. By the way, I have found MySpace to be and excellent community of musicians. It is full of interesting flamenco artists and afficionados. And it’s so easy to find them and communicate with them once you’re a MySpace member.
