My experience at the Paco De Lucia show in Vancouver

Elen, when I see that video of Farru dancing with Paco playing behind him, I try to imagine how old El Farruco would dance if he were in the same spot! Now, that would have been something to see!

Maybe Farru spoke to Paco about the workshop he held -- so don't be surprised if, on a future visit to Vancouver, Paco himself stops by the Kino Cafe to accompany you!

We can only dream of such things, of course, but it could happen -- the "staged" nature of Paco's shows must be a bit of a grind for him now and then, and a visit to the Kino would be in keeping with the spontaneity of "true" flamenco, and would probably be something he would enjoy.

One thing which is interesting to do is to look at all the Carmen Amaya videos on YouTube. There are the ones from Hollywood in the mid-30's, which are very glamorous, and later ones where she is in her normal gypsy garb back in Spain, just singing and dancing among family and friends. It is very revealing of the dual life of a "famous" flamenco performer, such as Carmen Amaya or Paco de Lucia. The search for duende is not often satisfied in the large concert hall, where it is hard to create the sort of juerga atmosphere that may occur more readily in a small club such as the Kino.
