I have decided to begin recording myself and writing more music, but I don't have much knowledge about the equipment i would need. Does anyone have suggestions as to what type of mic I should get (not just for flamenco but any other type of playing on my nylon string) and any suggestions for a mixer that is not too pricey? Any suggestions and advice would help. Thanks!

to get somewhat decent recording, you need
1) a sofware to record with 2) a condensor mic is usually recommended 3) a good preamp to power the condesor 4) an audio interface to hook up your mic and preamp to your computer. you dont really need a mixer because most softwares have mixers in them. you would be complicating things if you used an external mixer. |

I do a lot of recording. One important factor that many people over look is the room that they record in. If the room is small, you will require room treatment to get rid of the nasty flutter echos, the low end, and the "boxy" sound of the room.
Before I make any recommendations about equipment, what is your budget? |

you can make diy bass traps if you want. it's still not that cheap. room acoustics is a tricky game.
if you want to record just for the purpose of learning and composing, then you'll be fine with a basic recording setup and not worrying about room acoustics. get audacity. it's free. then get the alpha lexicon. 80 bucks. and a decent dynamic mic. 100 bucks. that's a fine way to start. the dynamic mic can also double as your live mic for performances. then if you want to get serious about recording, you can build from there. |
