Hello to all,
I am presently studying music at Cardiff University in Wales UK as a mature student after 24 years in the military. My background is primarily blues/jazz guitar but have been fascinated by Flamenco guitar and 'Cante Jondo' since i was exposed to it in southern spain, where i was based for two years. I am starting to do some research for a dissertation on the synergy between Flamenco and Arab music,so any help in that direction would be greatly appreciated! All the best, cheers, Darren |

Hi Darren,
Welcome to the forum! Seems to be nice to be based in the south of Spain........In my army time ( 27 years ago) I was Based as A Duch guy, in the North of German......very, very, cold winter...LOL. Where were you Based in Spain? Maybe this "flamenco tree" will help you a bit finding th roots http://nylonguitarist.com/images/famtree.gif Payul |

Hello,
Thanks for the link! looks like something i could use.I was based in Gibraltar 89/90 had a wonderful time and lucky enough to have a spanish girlfriend at the time to show me the sights, Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Ronda and the not so cultural side to! I have visited Germany a few times and always had fun there too mind. Do you think i should ask for some help and ideas of books and web sites in other forums? As for my Flamenco playing i am struggling but enthusiastic. Right hand rhythm is an issue. Thanks again for the reply and help, all the best, Darren. |

Hi Darren,
There is a lot out there on internet, Carlos Saura made a few flamenco music documentaries, he is from North Africa and accenting the morish roots of flamenco a lot. Here is an example, I think you love it ( if you do not know it allready) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uapUGquAtc Payul |

Thanks Payul,
Enjoyed the video.I will look at more of Carlos Saura'a work. The singing of Sheik al Tuni in other videos is really close to the Deep Song of Flamenco.I have joined the nylonguitarist forum too under 'Taff'. All the best mate, Darren. |
