Hi all,
I'm from southern Ontario, Canada. Have played guitar, mostly jazz, since 1968, but switched to nylon-string in 1995 and haven't used a pick in 15 years. I've been a student of the flamenco since 1998 or so (never had a teacher though, just using transcriptions and instructional videos). Alain Faucher's book of transcriptions of the Ramon Montoya recordings is my Bible now. For me, the biggest challenges are a) staying enough "in compas" to sound genuinely flamenco, b) wishing I knew enough Spanish/Catalan to understand the letras of the cante and c) finding anyone else in a 100-mile radius that "gets" the real flamenco . There's a local dance studio that offers classes in flamenco dance and might need an accompanist, but I would really have to improve my compas before I'd even dare to offer to do that... Mostly joining this forum to connect with other flamencos. How to tell a real flamenco? He pronounces olé "hal-ay"! mwheeler |

hey mwheeler,
playing for dance class is one of the best ways to learn compas! just go for it, dont be shy! other than that, a good old metronome will do the job. welcome to the forum!
