Barclay Flamenco Festival Workshop Schedule

The New World Flamenco Festival in Irvine has announced its schedule for Workshops and Classes taught by the Artist performing at Festival. Yaelisa, Jason McGuire, Juan Manuel Moneo, Carmen Grilo, Maria Jose Franco are just some of the instructors that will be teaching. All of the workshops and classes fill up fast so make sure you register in advance!

Pre-Festival Classes

During the weekend prior to the Festival’s official opening, Festival
Director, dancer and master teacher Yaelisa will teach four
workshops focused on enhancing technique and understanding of
the art of flamenco. For some students, these classes will serve as
a supplement to other workshops offered during the Festival. The
workshops are limited to 15 students in order provide personal
attention and maximize their value as an introduction to the Festival.
All classes will be accompanied by a guitarist.

Yaelisa:
Beginning Flamenco Technique

These beginning level classes are intended for those with modest
training or experience, or for those who wish to get “warmed up” for
classes later on with the Festival’s visiting artists. Attend one or both
classes. Bring tape recorders.

Sunday, August 5, 1:00-2:30pm; IBT Studio
$25 per session PAID IN ADVANCE or $30 day of event
Llimited to 15 persons.

Yaelisa:
Beginning/Intermediate Choreography (Tangos)

Learn to understand the structure of Tangos – and the codes and
signals necessary to communicate your baile to singers and guitarists.
Yaelisa will share some of her vast knowledge of the role of the cante.
Take one or both classes. Bring tape recorders.

Flamenco Communication

Advanced Master Class
This performance development master class is designed for the
advanced or professional student who wishes to learn and practice
the structure and signals necessary to communicate effectively with
musicians and other dancers. Using various styles such as Bulerias,
Tangos and Soleá, Yaelisa imparts her immense knowledge of
cante and baile with participants in a in a comfortable and casual
environment. Students must have a minimum of 5 years of flamenco
dance experience.

Tuesday, August 7, 6:30-8pm: IBT Stage
Limited to 15 students.
Free. Must be pre-registered in advanced level Academy classes.
Open to the public for observation.

Rina Orellana:
Niños Flamencos

Niños Flamencos is a fun, imaginative dance class for children aged 5-
10 in the basics of flamenco and Spanish dance and music, using the
elements of footwork (taconeo), arm and hand movements (brazeo)
and rhythms to create a cultural experience that this age group can
enjoy! Dancers will learn to use Spanish shawls and fans during the
session. Any small fan can be purchased in advance; a small quantity
will be available for purchase at the class.

Requirements: Flamenco shoes or leather-soled street shoes with a
short, thick heel that is supportive. Girls: Leotard top and full skirt that
can be moved. NO TENNIS SHOES, HIGH HEELS OR RUBBER-SOLED SHOES.

Festival Dance Classes

Maria José Franco:
Beginning/Intermediate Flamenco Technique

For dancers with at least three years of experience. Maria José brings
her considerable experience and technique for a hard-driving workout
designed to build strength, with an emphasis on taconeo.

Maria José Franco:
Intermediate/Advanced Choreography (Alegrias)

For dancers with at least three years of experience. Jerez-born Maria
José teaches the aire and chispa of her province of Cádiz in this
exciting choreography class.

Andrés Peña:
Intermediate/Advanced Choreography

(Soleá por Bulerias)
Andrés Peña will teach in the style of Soleá por Bulerias, combining
his aire de Jerez with strong remates (breaks). For dancers with at
least three years of experience.

Manuela Rios:
Beginning/Intermediate Choreography (Tientos)

Having danced for years at the famous Los Gallos tablao in Sevilla,
Manuela is now a partner to dancers of the caliber of Javier Barón,
Joaquin Grilo and Juan Ogalla. This class focuses on Tientos, and
requires three years of experience.

Juan Ogalla:
Advanced Choreography (Bulerias)

Juan’s trademark style captures the essence of flamenco: pellizco,
aire and personality, which he imparts in his Bulerias classes. Juan’s
reputation as a patient (and fun) teacher is legendary….make your
reservation early!

Flamenco Guitar/Cante Classes

Jason McGuire:
Intermediate/Advanced Guitar Master Class

The Festival’s Music Director, Jason McGuire, will provide students
with knowledge of flamenco structures, styles, and accompaniment
for flamenco dance and cante. He will also demonstrate ideas for
composition and phrasing. Bring tape recorders or video cameras.

Juan Manuel Moneo:
Intermediate/Advanced Guitar Master Class

Juan descends from one of the Jerez’s most important dynasties, Los
Moneo. As music director for both Maria José Franco and Antonio
el Pipa, he is uniquely qualified to help students understand both the
traditional and modern styling of Jerez guitar.

Eugenio Iglesias:
Advanced Guitar Master Class

Eugenio is one of the most in-demand guitarists for dance companies
today. He is an excellent composer for dance and gears his class
towards dance composition for the guitarist.

David Palomar:
Intermediate/Advanced Cante Master Class

David Palomar performs with many of Andalucia’s major artists and
will teach a class for student singers, guitarists and dancers who want
further exposure to the cante.

Carmen Grilo:
Advanced Cante Master Class

A unique opportunity for any student of flamenco to sit with one of
Spain’s most exciting, young talents. Carmen is a major star (and the
sister of dancer Joaquin Grilo) and has toured for years with the great
Manolo Sanlucar. Carmen teaches a class focused on the structure
of cantes, their varying styles and interpretation to give the student a
rounded cultural experience, as well as teaching some diverse letras.
This class is open to singers, dancers and guitarists. This class will
close at 10 students; it is recommended you reserve early.

Moi de Morón:
Intermediate/Advanced Cante Master Class

A member of the popular group Son de la Frontera, Moi de Morón is a
native of Morón de la Frontera and will teach a class demonstrating a
variety of styles.
