Enrique Morente Hospitalized

One of Flamenco greats, Enrique Morente, allegedly succumbed to coma after suffering from a stroke, the report came from some Spanish media, although no official reports has been released. Morente was reported to have been treated from esophageal cancer and was recovering after two surgeries.

Born in Albaicin District in Granada, Spain, Morente at the age of 18 moved to Madrid, Spain where he took the name Enrique El Granaíno or Enrique, from Granada.  There, he worked with Pepe de la Matrona, Bernardo el de los Lobitos, Manolo de Huelva, who are a few of the biggest names in the Flamenco world.

His curiosity and interest in assimilating and performing difficult cantes and styles,  paid off when critics and experts alike were astonished and awed by this young artist, who has the commitment to be a broad based cantor, who has no distinction of school or geographical division.

Regarded as the best in Flamenco following the death of another Flamenco legend, Camaron de la Isla, Morente will be 68 one the 25th of December.  Married to Aurora Carbonell whom he had 3 children, which includes Estrella Morente, Enrique Morente Carbonell and Maria Solea Morente.

Prior to the incident, Morente had been working on his new album “El barbero de Picasso” or Picasso’s barber, a tribute to the great Spanish painter who was born in Malaga, Spain.  It was due to be released in the coming weeks.
