Flamenco great Enrique Morente has died at age 67

The Flamenco world mourns the passing of another Flamenco great, Enrique Morente.  Enrique Morente whose worsening condition was reported days ago, died on Monday , December 13th, 2010 at 5 p.m. according to his family official’s statement.

Born in Albaicin District in Granada, Spain, on December 25, 1942, Enrique Morente moved to Madrid, Spain where he took the name Enrique El Granaíno or Enrique from Granada at the age of 18.  There, he worked on and off stage with Pepe de la Matrona, Bernardo el de los Lobitos, Manolo de Huelva, who during his time were the biggest names in the Flamenco world.

His passing is widely felt as one of the pillars of Flamenco has left us, still having had a great deal to contribute to the art.

It was reported that he stayed at a clinic in Madrid for more than a week and had undergone two emergency operations.  However, his condition’s worsened due to two cerebral strokes which brought irreversible damages on his health condition with the fatal outcome.

Morente who would be turning 68 this coming December 25th is survived by his loving wife Aurora Carbonell whom he had 3 children, Estrella Morente, who is a an amazing Flamenco singer, Enrique Morente Carbonell and Maria Solea Morente.

Prior to his early demise, Morente had been working on his new album “El barbero de Picasso” or Picasso’s barber, a tribute to the great Spanish painter who was born in Malaga, Spain.  It was due to be released in the coming weeks.
